Graduation Cap – Congratulations Graduates!

Our university, decided to give our batch a Commencement Exercises Program. We were the batch that had completed all required units in the midst of the pandemic.

As the pandemic hit, all public gathering were cancelled and we were forced to adapt to the new setup; school and work had to be done online, restrictions and health protocols everywhere we go. Now, after more than a year, we would finally get to celebrate a momentous occasion.

Because of this, I decided to create a crocheted item that would commemorate this event. A toga is a symbol of wisdom, this is the reason why graduates wear it on graduation day. But since our graduation will be done online, we will not be able to wear one. I may not be able to create a graduation toga, I thought I could at least create a Graduation Cap.

I made two of these since I wanted to give one to a close friend of mine. It was pretty simple. Here are the materials I used:

  • Black indophil yarn
  • Contrast color yarn (for tassel)
  • Folder or Cardboard
  • 4mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Black Garter
  • Tapestry Needle

It was easy making these, and it was fun. Perhaps, the biggest challenge for this project was managing the cardboard or folder. For my cap, I used cardboard, while for my friend, I used folder.

The square part was supposed to be enclosed by crocheted yarns, so it was a bit hard. Its a matter of negotiating whether a new layer is needed or if it is enough.

Then, I had to create the part that would make it wearable. In this case, I used a black garter and crocheted loosely around it. Attaching it to the crocheted part of the cardboard was manageable with the help of stitch markers

The last part would be making and attaching the tassel. I had to make it by hand without any other tools so it was kind of hard, but I did this a lot of times so it became easy.

Here’s a photo of me trying it out! I’ll try to upload one with my photo on the graduation screen after the graduation on Facebook, 🙂
