Miniature Dobsonian Telescope

Hi everyone!!!

I made another astronomy related crochet creation!

I thought of making a telescope miniature because I love Observational Astronomy! It is my favorite subject in my course which is BS Astronomy Technology!

Dobsonian Telescopes are one of my favorite telescopes to use on observation. Although most of our university’s Dobsonian Telescopes are heavy and hard to transport, they are good quality and are easy to manage and learn, especially for beginners.

Those are the first telescopes I had experience with, the first telescopes where I captured Jupiter, Saturn, and Moon, and the first telescope where I saw Uranus.

Now that you’ve seen how I loved these telescopes, let’s move on to what I have created.

Although it took me less than two hours to finish this, the challenges in creating this is still a lot.

I used white mercerized yarn, black indophil yarn, 1.9mm crochet hook, some old clothes for filling, an old hairpin, a pair of scissors, and pliers

It was hard to use two different kinds of yarn and make it look like the size were the same or just right. The indophil yarn was so bulky compared to the mercerized yarn.

I first did the Optical Tube Assembly replica. At first, I wanted to add specific details such as finder scope, etc to it. But it will become too heavy and the yarn holders on the side might not hold up, so I didn’t.

The mount itself was a lot harder. I just eyeballed everything hoping it would fit. Luckily it did.

Then the most challenging part, was connecting the two together. At first, I tried with just yarn, then tying it off. It didn’t work. The OTA was just too heavy.

Then I thought of using the same technique I did with Crocheted Chang’e. I looked for an old hairpin and cut it in a size that is enough. It at least stands now.

But, I really have to be careful in placing it, or else it will fall. Or the OTA will slump like this:
